SmitFraud
is a type of malware that installs itself without permission.
Mostly, it installs after another program or music files have been used from file sharing program such as
eDonkey, Shareaza, WinMX, BitTorrent, Limewire, Morpheus, eMule, Ares, BearShare or Kazaa
SmitFraud infects a Windows system file with a computer virus and typically changes the infected computer's desktop background into a fake security warning. You may also see fake alerts from software suggesting you install their “AntiSpyware” or “AntiVirus”. It can also produce pop-up ads that can prove a huge annoyance.
Removal
Several of the “free” antivirus packages cannot remove these files because they load into RAM early in the boot process.
According to Wikipedia, one solution is to
"boot with DOS, Linux, or a bootable Windows disc, then remove the (infected) files, then afterwards remove the registry keys."
And another solution is to
"reformat your computer."
Both of these “solutions” are fraught with dangers for the victim.
