In the early stages, resources are crucial and can make the difference between a great general and a poor soldier.
You need to keep a balance between available resources, taxes (suppress population) and workers.
To start with, taxes are at 10%, the 20% (quest) then set to 50% as a good "standard" rate. There are tax dodges elsewhere in the guide.
For more workers,increase cottages, up to max of 9.
lvl2 cottage is the best return for your resource investment. Only increase when you need more population.
Keep checking the Quest list for bonuses.
"Perfect" city fast build Please keep this ONLY for GODZ
Opinions vary, but my favoured city plan is (in city 1 and in the first instance - you'll understand fully later)
1 Farm on row 1, 3 saw mills, 2 quarries and 2 mines.
Further rows are 4 saw mills, 2 quarries and 2 mines, u.ntil Town Hall reaches level 4
An alternative, preferred by our more agressive players is 4 mines, 4 saw mills, 4 quarries and the rest farms, for faster troop building.
I also like to be neat, so make space to have them in blocks together.
I build my first town with 9 cottages and 11 barracks.
You can "Speed build" for free, by clicking “speed up” up to the following levels: Farms - 4, Saw Mills - 3, Quarries - 3, Mines - 2.
Before you start this, collect newbies package and apply 4 resource “boosters”
During this speed build, you may run low on resources or population.
Use your discretion to buy resources from the market and build cottages to increase workers.
Open the City screen.
Speed build a cottage to level 2.
Speed build 1 of each - farm, saw mill, quarry, mine, all to level 1.
Collect the 7 quest bonuses.
Speed build the Inn
Build the Feasting hall
As it builds, in Town Hall (TH) set production rates to 100%
Collect the quest bonus
Set tax rate to 20% - (In TH)
Collect the quest bonus
Set tax rate to 50% (for now)
Rename city - (In TH)
Change Flag (click avatar, then bottom button)
Collect the quest bonus
Upgrade the Town Hall to level 2, using 2 “Beginner’s Guides”
Collect the quest bonuses
Now speed build 1st row spaces in the "city" to level 1, according to your chosen layout

Speed build 3 more cottages to level 1 (now 4 cottages)

Collect the quest bonus (inc amulets)

Recruit hero

Install hero as mayor (increases resource production)

Now build a marketplace.
Get promoted to Lt.

Sell 1 item at market, claim the quest bonus.

In the “City” window, speed build the 2nd row of resources to level 1.

Take a break, to let resources build up.
Raise the Town Hall to level 2
Speed build resource fields to level 1, as per favoured layout
Build the Academy
Speed upgrade 1 saw mill to level 2
Research lumbering 2
Now speed upgrade all saw mills to level 2
The main “Fast Build” section has now ended.
Carry on building resources to max fast build levels.
Build up to 11 barracks.
Research targets are Construction, Horse Riding and Archery.
